PERU BAR

The Song We Picked

OWNO

  • MEET YOUNG-CHHAYLE

Young-Chhaylee is a singer/songwriter of the PNW. Growing up on the south side of Everett, WA, and being a first-generation Cambodian-American has shaped the experience that he speaks on. His writing, style, and groove are pieces taken from John Mayer, J. Cole, Otis Redding, and D'Angelo. His voice is powerful yet flutters. Simultaneously strong and vulnerable.

  • WHY THIS SONG AND OUR CHOCOLATE BELONG TOGETHER

Young-Chhaylee (Chhaylee, to his friends) is infamous in the local Seattle singer-songwriter scene. This man’s voice is smoother than butter, and his songwriting will get you right in the feels. His songs can have dark themes, but his angelic voice balances out the darkness and leaves you feeling hopeful and bright. That’s why we thought he’d be a great pairing with our Peruvian chocolate. This bar is our darkest offering. However, the flavor notes are bright and bouncy! It makes your eyes widen, and your head perk up - just like Chhaylee’s music. We’ve chosen OWNO because the bright Rhodes and guitar tones fit perfectly with the chocolate's bright notes, but do yourself a favor and check out the rest of his music. Especially his song, You Are Not Alone.

The Music:

We know, we know—you want to dive into the chocolate first. But we suggest starting with the music.

  • First, scroll back up and click the Spotify link we provided. The song is also available on Tidal.

  • Treat yourself! Put on some headphones. Don’t listen to the song through your phone’s speakers. Artists put so much work into the mix—the sound of the guitars, the placement a drum roll, subtle flourishes of a Rhodes keyboard. With headphones, you’ll be able to hear all those beautiful subtleties. And trust us—Chhaylee has packed his music with endless details that elevate every note.

  • We told you!! Isn’t his voice wild?! Ok, now it’s time to add the chocolate.

The Chocolate:

  • Just like you took your time with the music, take your time with the chocolate.

  • Start by breaking off a small piece from the corner and chewing it. This is just to familiarize your palate with the flavor. It’s okay to swallow this part quickly—think of this step like turning on your amp and letting it warm up before you play.

  • Now, take another small bite, but this time, let it melt. Slow down. Let the chocolate move around your palate.

  • This chocolate bar is bright! It’s fruity. It makes your eyebrows raise, and your eyes widen. You can’t help but move a bit when eating this bar. You might even let out a “oh dang!”.

  • All of these reasons are why we think it pairs perfectly with Chhaylee’s music—especially the song OWNO. This song is punchy yet smooth. Your body will grove and move with the brightness of Chhaylee’s voice and the fun citrusy tones from the chocolate.

  • Reuben Woodruff played the keys on this track and we love what he did at 1:41.

  • At 2:20, when the drums really pick up, take another big bite of chocolate and let that bite dance around your palate while you rock out.

  • Now, go explore more of Chhylee’s music, and keep indulging in the rest of your chocolate bar.
